MARJIE SCOTT
Producing Artistic Director
Marjorie Scott grew up in Oakland, California. She moved to Los Angeles when she was 17 to attend Occidental College where she earned a B.A. in Theatre. She earned her M.F.A. in Film Producing from the Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California. Go Trojans! Marjie was a working actor under her maiden name, Marjie Gum, in Los Angeles for over ten years, appearing in live theatre, film, television, and national commercials. She worked in production at NBC Universal and development at Red Wagon Entertainment at Sony before moving to Jordan with her husband and toddler in 2011 to teach at the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts (RSICA). Marjie moved to Alpine in 2013 and is an Associate Professor of Communication and Theatre at Sul Ross. She has served as Chair of the SRSU Department of Visual and Performing Arts since 2018. Past directing and producing credits at Sul Ross include Oleanna, Silent Sky, The Cake, Alpine Ghost Tours, Teniamos Todo, Alice in Wonderland: A Radio Play, The Wolves, Constellations, Clybourne Park, The Christians, A Christmas Carol, and Hamlette. For Theatre of the Big Bend, Marjie produced The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2023), You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (2022), directed Charlotte’s Web (2016), and served as choreographer for Nunsense (2019), Smokey Joe’s Café (2018), and The Fantasticks (2017). She also appeared as Rose in Theatre of the Big Bend’s production of Bleacher Bums(2018), one of her favorite roles to date. Marjie thanks her husband and two daughters for their love and support.

BRET SCOTT
Director / Sound Design
Bret Scott was born in San Mateo, California and began his professional career as an actor at the age of 17. He earned a BFA in acting/directing from the University of Arizona, and promptly left the desert for the snow and wind of Chicago, Illinois, where he spent a decade working with the Annoyance Theater, ImprovOlympic, and the famed Second City theater, among others. A move to Los Angeles led to an MFA in film production from the University of Southern California and a widely varied set of filmmaking experiences, from documentary editor to indie film director and almost every position on a film crew in between. This is Bret’s 10th season with Theatre of the Big Bend, beginning in 2014 with his performance as The Baker in Into the Woods. Most recently, Bret directed The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown for Theater of the Big Bend, and Hand to God and Dead Man’s Cell Phone for Sul Ross Theatre. Bret has written, edited, or directed shows and pilots for A&E, MTV, BBC America, HBO, Showtime, Apple, funnyordie.com, SeaWorld, and — his favorite — the Illinois State Maximum Security Correctional Facility in Joliet, Illinois, best known as the part-time home of Jake Blues.

ROSS FLEMING
Scenic and Lighting Design / Technical Director
Ross Fleming is a Professor of Theatre and Technical Director/Scene Designer at Sul Ross. He was an Associate Professor at UT El Paso for over a decade where he served as Head of Design: Scenic Designer/TD for the UTEP Department of Theatre and Dance. Ross spent one year as a guest professor and graduate student mentor at Texas Tech University. Ross has designed and/or technically directed over 250 shows on the professional, collegiate, and high school levels. Ross received the Texas Educational Theatre Associations (TETA) Higher Education Educator of the Year award in 2019. In his involvement with The Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival, he has garnered numerous awards for both technical direction and design and has been awarded the Gold Medallion Award for his service as the D/T/M Chair for Region 6. Ross received the National Partners in American Theatre Mentor Award from KC/ACTF Region 6. The 51st National Festival, KC/ACTF honored Ross’s scene design for SRSU’s production of Red, as the Outstanding Scene Design.

CAROLYN BARRIENTES
Costume Design
Carolyn Barrientes is Assistant Professor of Industrial Technology and Theatre at Sul Ross State University where she teaches costume technology, scenic design, and interior design courses. Carolyn designed costumes for Sul Ross main stage productions of Oleanna (Meritorious Award in Costume Design from the Region 6 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival), Hand to God, Silent Sky, Dead Man’s Cell Phone, The Cake, Blithe Spirit,and The Wolves. She also designed costumes for Theatre of the Big Bend productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Carolyn served as scenic designer for SRSU main stage productions of Constellations, Hair, Our Lady of the Tortilla, Man of La Mancha, Bleacher Bums, Smokey Joe’s Café, and Macbeth. In 2021, she spearheaded a bilingual theatre initiative that culminated an original one-act play Jesus Y La Tamalera written by her husband and colleague Benjamin Barrientes. Sul Ross students performed a workshop production of the play on the Sul Ross campus and a presented a full production the Alpine Multicultural Festival in 2022. Carolyn holds an MFA in Scenic/Costume Design from The University of Iowa. She thanks her husband and son for their love and support.
