our story

Founded in 1965, Theatre of the Big Bend is partnership between Sul Ross State University, working theatre professionals, and the vibrant Big Bend community. For six decades, we have brought live performances under the stars at the Kokernot Outdoor Theater, creating unforgettable summer experiences in the heart of West Texas.

We are committed to bringing high quality live theatre to the Big Bend.

We are artists and craftspeople dedicated to keeping theatre accessible and affordable for all audiences. We celebrate the rich and unique culture of West Texas. We honor our designation as a Dark Skies Community.

We are your theatre under the stars.

One of only a few university outdoor summer theatre programs in Texas, Theatre of the Big Bend serves as a living laboratory for Sul Ross State University’s renowned theatre program. Students work intensively with alumni, guest artists, and faculty both onstage and backstage, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in acting, design, technical production, and stage management.
